The Castle of Chapultepec houses the National Museum of History (NMH). The museum is divided in two areas: the main building contains the museum of Mexican history (from the Spanish conquest to the promulgation of the Constitution of 1917), and el Alcazar (fortress, castle of palace) is a site museum (which gives an idea of what the rooms may have looked like). Although strictly speaking both terms (Castillo and Alcazar) mean the same, with time and by museography it has been preferred to identify two areas that have had different purposes throughout the history of the building. The Alcazar has kept the sense of a residence that the heads of state have given to it: their bedrooms and lounges recreate the period ambiance that evokes the daily life of those who lived there “to show —in the museum founders’ words— a scene of rich reminiscences left by people deeply engraved in the bronze of History”. A stroll around the Alcazar recalls not only the life of these-long lost dignitaries, but also the historical events and artistic influences the Mexico experienced throughout the 19th century and the firs decades of the 20th century.
